FULL EVENT DESCRIPTION:

This session will be a way for beginners and non-designers to get comfortable with the basic principles of design (colour, typography, layout and psychology) and pick up the intangible skills that are hard to learn alone, but essential in coming up with fresh ideas, working with other creatives and designing with human behaviour in mind.

The main topics I'll be covering are...

• FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND MINDSET
A walkthrough of the design process from start to finish to show how a designer comes up with and implements concepts, and a review of existing designs and products to see how colour, typography, layout and psychology are used in real life and how you can these principles to your own work

• HOW TO GET STARTED AS A BEGINNER
The most common mistakes that beginners make and how to avoid them, how to find inspiration and what equipment and software to use when you're starting out

• HOW TO GET BETTER AT DESIGN
How to tell if you are making progress, advice on how best to improve your skills and ways to find opportunities to practise design

This workshop will be tailored to people with no or little previous design experience. Whether you are looking to learn a new skill, want to get a job/change role/start your own company, or are just interested in design, you are all very welcome to come!

To join, register on the google form below now! Limited spaces available!

This workshop will be taught by me, Barney! I've got 8 years of design experience, started 3 design companies since I was 16, and have worked on over 200 projects with startups, SMEs and multinational corporations. I have also taught design to over 250 students at The University of Warwick, Durham University and in Hong Kong for over 3 years, and run private design sessions with startups and incubator cohorts.

You can see some of my work on Behance (https://www.behance.net/barneyyau), read about my thoughts on design, creativity and video making on Medium (https://medium.com/@barneyyau) and view a short video compilation of my previous workshops at The University of Warwick on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zooJ_W6exi4).

This talk will be delivered by Graduate Electronics Engineer Nish Singh, an Imperial College alumnus!

Connecting Dyson’s Future

We’re Dyson. A global technology enterprise. We're about better technologies, better ideas and better ways. Reinventing as we go. In 1993, James Dyson launched the first bagless vacuum cleaner. But a lot has changed since then. As we continue to grow, we’re exploring new frontiers and traversing the unknown. In 2012 we were 3120 people. Today we're approaching 9000. We transform every category we enter. Our future is bright and the next few years are set to be our busiest yet. 3000 new engineers. 100 new machines. Revolutionising new categories. All by 2020.

At Dyson, we believe in maximising your potential through real-life experiences. In this industry talk, Nish Singh, Graduate Electronics Engineer and former Imperial College alumnus, will share with you his journey through this cutting edge technology company, firstly as an Intern and now as a Graduate within our Software team.

Introducing the next IndustrEE talk -'Banking with Bots' hosted by Goldman Sachs Engineering!

A system was built to give the business a fast and efficient way to communicate with our Technology teams across the globe. It allows for one point of interaction which leverages multiple sources within the firm, attempting to first solve the issue itself and if not asking relevant questions to the user.

We apply Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning algorithms to match a query with a solution, with the aim to automate menial and monotonous tasks

Speaker Bio:
Niccolo graduated from Imperial College London in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2016, and joined the Graduate program the same summer in FICC Technology. The team focuses on working with traders and sales to help them with their day to day business and throughout deals. We are predominantly SecDb developers, but new business allows us to experiment with new technologies to better serve our clients.

  • How does Electrical, Electronic and Software Engineering fit into the vehicles of today and the vehicles of tomorrow
  • What are the big challenges and drives that transform the Automotive Industry and how Jaguar Land Rover tackles them
  • What opportunities does Jaguar Land Rover offer for Electrical, Electronic and Software Engineers
  • My personal experience as a graduate in Jaguar Land Rover
